About the Session
What is urban sketching?
The urban sketching community has sky rocketed in popularity in the past 10 years with sketch crawls happening all over the world. Even if you're not the most skilled artist, urban sketching is definitely a great way to improve your drawing skills.
This informal, relaxed session is designed to introduce you to the delights of sketching in a group, with all of the benefits that this brings: support, help, feedback, and inspiration. The session will be led by artist John Harrison, who has a good few years experience of sketching, and is aimed at starting you off on the path to developing your sketching habit.
John will start with a brief overview of what to expect, covering topics such as how, where, what to draw, then you'll head off in a group to hunt down suitable sketch locations before setting down to get stuck in. John will move around the group during this, to encourage and guide your work, and then the last 45 minutes or so will be devoted to a communal feedback session back at base.
About the Artist
John Harrison is Yorkshire born and bred and proud of it.
His home county, especially the wonderful towns and villages along the East coast is the inspiration for much of his work, seen and drawn with a different view of familiar places, consciously avoiding cliched postcard views of places, but actively looking for a different angle or quirky view.
"I now work almost exclusively in a crisp line style, with minimal colour. This sparse, uncluttered feels the most natural thing in the world, and I hope that feeling comes through in my work - I strive not to 'over egg the pudding' but the most difficult thing, as any artist will tell you, is to know when to stop."
John is an active participant in the Urban Sketchers global phenomenon, attending at least one organised Sketchcrawl a month, with a busy calendar of demonstrations and workshops with art clubs and societies across the North, and beyond.
